All Used Wooden Pallets

Manufacturers, Distribution companies, Packers, warehousing, RDC’s to name but a few all use some form of pallet whether it be wooden, plastic, metal, composite, cardboard, new or recycled. The pallets main function is to enable a heavy load to be moved, stored and delivered without having to be handled by hand. The pallet has two or four entry sides and can be easily lifted by a fork lift or pump up truck.

There are an enormous amount of pallet specifications throughout industry, if they are manufactured bespoke, the sizes, static and dynamic weight capacity are all taken into consideration as well as the use for the pallet and what product will be loaded on to it.

Dynamic: Is when the full pallet is in the loading process for either storage, racking, moved from one point to another by either fork lift or pump up. When the pallet is in motion:

Static: Is when the pallet is on the ground or shop floor, in a loading bay or racking system. When the pallet is still:

In the UK, the most common pallets used are as follows:

UK standard size 1200 x 1000mm

Every pallet starts life new, with the 1200 x 1000mm there are many grades for this pallet, its origin is manufactured bespoke for a particular client, the client dispatches the end product and the customer now has possession of the pallets. The customer either does one of the following to the pallet his goods arrive on.

  • Re use them for their own use if the size is as to their requirement
  • Return them to the seller
  • Sell them to a man and his lorry collecting from industrial estates who then takes them to the pallet yards to sell.
  • Sell them directly to a pallet company who offer a site collection

The grades for the used 1200 x 1000mm are as follows:

The PB stands for perimeter base, which means if the pallet is turned upside down there will be flat supporting boards around the perimeter of the base of the pallet. Thus enabling safe and sturdy stacking and storage with an even weight distribution.

  • PB001 A Grade – Clean timber heavy duty holds 1 tonne PB
  • PB002 B Grade – Weathered timber heavy duty holds 1 tonne PB
  • PB003 C Grade – Can be clean and weathered medium weight holds 700 kilos PB

The next size of pallet common to the UK and is demanded throughout Europe is the Euro pallet. There are four different grades for this pallet widely used in the UK . You can easily identify a Euro pallet by the markings branded onto the pallet. On one block there will be an EPAL branding, on the middle block will be the license number and ISPM15 number and on another block will be the country of origin. The grades are as follows:

  • EURO pallet 1200 x 800 mm – EUR001 – Clean timber, used once or twice, heavy duty 1 tonne. Branded with all EPAL requirements.
  • EUR002 Weathered timber, many have a couple of slight chips in timber. Heavy duty holds one tonne, Branded with all EPAL requirements.
  • EUR003 Clean or weathered euro size pallet without markings will medium weight up to 700 kilos
  •  EUR004 Clean or weathered timber, lightweight one trip pallet without markings. Holds up to 500 kilos

In Europe the euro pallet system is slightly different. There is the European pallet pool where companies are in a system where they pay so much for the pallet and when it is returned into the pool they receive a credit according to the grade of pallet.

Why use recycled pallets?

A benefit to industry in Europe of using a used reconditioned pallet is the reduction of producer responsibility obligations relating to the Packaging Waste regulation. In 1998 the European Directive introduced the Packaging Waste Legislation. Companies were to register with a government body for compliance and recover, recycle or re use for sustainable energy, a percentage of the raw material purchased by said company. The said company would then receive a PRN (Packaging recovery note) certificate to the value of the tonnage disposed of for recycling or energy this would the offset to the value of the raw material purchased in that period and reduce the obligation due.
